  • Types of Fleas:

    • Cat Flea (Ctenocephalides felis) – the most common flea in Australia. It attacks cats, dogs and humans. This flea is responsible for flea plagues, and carries the cat and dog tapeworm (which is transmittable to humans). They are 2-8mm in length and covered with bristles.
    • Dog Flea (Ctenocephalides canis) – not common
    • Human Flea (Pulex irritans) – no common
    • Rat Flea (Xenopsylla cheopis) – carries the flea-borne disease murine typhus which is transmitted from rats to humans

    Fleas vary in shades of brown – from light to dark. They are oval shaped from the side and slender from above. This slip-streamed body shape allows them to quickly move through the hair of their host.

    While fleas rely on blood for their nutrition, they can survive for several months without it. This explains flea re-infestations if the right pest control strategies have not been used. Female fleas lay about 100 eggs within their life-time. The flea larvae feed on skin scales and undigested blood excreted by the adults.
